Nutrition Nerd: Have You Heard of Greatist.com?
Hi everyone! Can you believe the end of 2011 is almost here? As usual, the year seems to have flown by for me. How about for you? This time of year tends to revolve around food focused parties, making healthy eating and regular exercise a challenge. This time of year also seems to revolve around discussion of vows to “do better” in the new year. Therefore, with those two things in mind I want to share a site I recently found out about, Greatist.com. Greatist is a site devoted to sharing articles about Fitness, Nutrition, Health, and Happiness. Therefore, it can certainly be a great resource during the holiday season and through your “healthier” new year!
When I was first asked to review the Greatist site, I agreed, but to be honest I was quite dubious. I thought this would just be another site doling out inaccurate advice about nutrition and exercise. However, after spending some time reading through various articles and examining the writers’ biographies, I was actually impressed! I appreciate that the writers link to peer-reviewed journal articles and the fact that they are all open and straight forward about their background, credentials, certifications, etc in their bios. Although the authors are not “experts” necessarily on the topics they are writing about, all have solid journalistic/writing backgrounds. They research topics they are interested in learning more about and pass on the information to readers in an accurate, yet understandable manner!
Too often today we tend to come across unqualified individuals passing off health/fitness/nutrition advice without any references to support their remarks, so I am so glad to see a site devoted to responsible dissemination of accurate material! Here are some articles I found that may be helpful now as we are in the midst of the December Holiday season: 80 Healthy Recipe Substitutions, 23 Ways to Reduce Stress, 17 Ways to Stay Fit This Holiday Season.
If you are looking for information on a specific topic I suggest using Greatist’s A-Z index, which will lead you to articles covering a large variety of topics from: What Happens to Your Brain When You Black Out (from Alcohol), to TRX Suspension Training, and even tasty recipes such as Quinoa and Sweet Potato Stuffed Mushrooms.
Have you visited Greatist.com before? If so, what article(s) have been most helpful to you personally so far? How do you keep yourself on track during the holiday season? Do you make New Year’s Resolutions? If so, what are they for 2012?
