Week 14 New York City Marathon Training Preview: “Pro” and “Joe”
Welcome to the week 14 review of our New York City Marathon training program.
The “Joe”: Wow, race week is here! When we started this months ago I thought that I would never get to race week….but here it is and I could not be more excited. It is an amazing feeling to look back over the past 13 weeks and see the results from the hard work. I definitely felt it this past weekend when going for my 40 min run. I felt strong, confident and ready to tackle the marathon. I can not even begin to express how excited I am for the marathon this weekend. The crowds. The city. The atmosphere. The accomplishment.
I am only going to say one thing and then let the Coach take over from here. Stay positive all week. Don’t doubt your fitness or training. You are all ready to dominate this weekend. Enjoy the next few days, get lots of sleep and come out on Sunday ready to run your best race ever!
The “Pro”: Welcome to the world of “tapering!” This is going to be a week in which your self-control is tested in a completely different way. Even if you have tapered for a previous marathon, it is still awkward to do literally nothing in preparation for something huge and extremely difficult. Don’t let this week’s rest go by without savoring this time and soaking in the fitness that you have achieved. Relax and TRUST in your training. I find this a great chance to discipline myself with regard to eating properly and holding off on the post-race gluttony. It’s ok to imagine the treats you’ll reward yourself with post-race and create a mental image for motivation. Mmmmm…..donuts or burgers or a beer!
Take the week to create your final checklists and arrangements to ensure the race experience will be incredible for both you and your valuable supporters.
See ya in the Big Apple!
Good luck with Week 14 of iRunnerBlog’s New York City Marathon Training Schedule. The complete schedule and upcoming week’s schedule can be found here, with also alternative track workouts for Monday.
